He was born in Lynn, moved to Lexington, where he was a wheelright, and had seven children.

He either divorced or deserted his wife Susannah there, because he moved to Newburgh, Orange Co, NY, circa 1800, when his name appears on a tax roll there.¹. He was a wheelright turned horticulturalist in Newburgh. He supposedly married Eunice Bridge, of Winchester, Worcester Co, MA (though no marriage record has been found), and had five children in Newburgh: Eunice, Charles, George Washington, Fanny, Andrew Jackson, the latter being a well known author and noted horticulturalist and landscape gardner.²

His 10 May 1822 Orange Co, NY will (Vol G, p. 74) identifies himself as a wheelwright from Newburgh, leaves bequests to his wife Eunice, his sons Charles (whom he appoints joint executor with Eunice), George W., and Andrew J., and to his daughter Emily. He also leaves to Susannah Downing "one half of the house and all the lands belonging to me in the Town of Lexington near Boston in the state of Massachusetts." He designates Samuel Downing, son of Susannah, "to receive the shop, and one half of the house sitting on the lands given to his said mother Susannah."³
